The Chequers has been owned and managed by husband and wife team, Roberto and Giovanna Zeolla since 2001. They moved from London and have always had a passion for great food; they opened their first establishment in Covent Garden in the early nineties, a café called Mode before moving to Holborn to open Bar M. They have it in their blood. Roberto comes from London where his family ran a chain of successful fish and chip shops in the East End. Whilst Giovanna comes from Buckinghamshire where her parents ran the famous Four Pillars restaurant in Olney for 24 years, her sister runs the renowned Robinsons in Newport Pagnell. Hailed as bringing the cappuccino to the countryside, Roberto and Giovanna have brought The Chequers back to life, and transformed it into a stylish country pub and restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere and firm focus on great food. Their philosophy to food is simple; freshly made and delicious. They offer modern British cruisine with Mediterranean twist using the freshest ingredients, lovingly prepared. Everything is homemade and where possible sourced locally including vegetables from their local allotment and fresh herbs grown in the Restaurant’s herb garden. The Chequers is located in the heart of the delightful village of Matching Green on the Herts / Essex border not far from the M11. It is very much part of local the community. Regular local highlights include the Essex Hunt on Boxing Day, the Easter Egg hunt, the May Day parade, the Classic and Sports Car Show on the first Sunday in August and the popular Bonfire Night celebrations on the green on the 5 November.

The Black Lion is the oldest pub in Epping & is said to have links with the infamous highwayman Dick Turpin. Originally established as a public house way back in 1755, The Swan With Two Necks is steeped in history. It dates back even further as a coaching inn. There was also an associated blacksmiths next door ready to tend to the patron's horses (in the building which is now the Longdon Women's Institute Hall). The pictures you see here are from the early 1900's and feature the resident apprentice blacksmith of that time, Tom Broadhurst. The name "Swan With Two Necks" refers to the crest of the Worshipful Company of Vintners, a once powerful guild who held land and houses all over England. The expression “with two necks,” really means “two nicks” that is, two special marks on the beak to denote the difference between the Vintners’ swans on the Thames and those of the King. Illiterate sign-painters have simply translated the words “two nicks” into “two necks”

Having been closed since 2010, a long campaign from the local community saw The Bull at Blackmore End being brought to life once again. It has undergone an extensive renovation programme, and the dramatic transformation of the building both inside and out must be seen to be believed. Every effort has been made to restore the charm and character of this traditional country pub, whilst also ensuring that it is both elegant and inviting to customers old and new.
