White Lion - St Albans

91 Sopwell Lane
St Albans, Hertfordshire AL1 1RN
United Kingdom

The White Lion is located at the east end of Sopwell Lane in the historic city of St Albans. A former coaching inn built in the 16th century, today the pub is a cosy warren with 2 bars and 5 separate seating areas. Exposed beams and white walls show the building to its best advantage and, in colder months, open fires help to keep toes toasty. Outside we have a huge safely enclosed pub garden with boules piste, covered smoking area and BBQ. We pride ourselves on the quality and variety of our real ales, a surprising number for such a small pub! On any given day we aim to have a minimum of 8 beers, 2 lagers and a cider on hand pumps. We also have a full range of bottled lagers, ciders, perries and soft drinks. To reinforce our reputation as a hostelry serving good quality ale, we are very proud of our current ranking of 3rd overall in CAMRA’s South Herts region. Wherever possible we source ingredients for our traditional pub food from local producers and all meals are made from what’s in season at the time of year. All pub meals are freshly prepared for each individual order and, with a constantly changing specials board, there’s always something new and tasty to try. We also keep our own chickens and use their wonderful eggs in our home-cooked meals. Even though we aren’t the biggest pub in the world, this doesn’t deter us from showcasing live music every week with different bands from near and far. Music ranges from rock, blues, jazz and soul with many sessions being semi-acoustic. Plus we have a regular Wednesday session night with local musicians playing traditional Celtic, European and American folk music. True to form of any great English pub, we believe our serfs (sorry, staff!) makes us what we are: a friendly and relaxed place people visit to enjoy great beers, wine and food. We’re an animal-friendly pub, and welcome well-behaved dogs in the bar and garden – a doggy treats jar in on the bar! We look forward to welcoming you soon, but if you can’t wait

Castle Hotel - Manchester

66 Oldham Street
Manchester, Lancashire M4 1LE
United Kingdom

The 200 year long story of The Castle Hotel is woven not just into it's bricks and mortar, its Victorian tiles or its mosaic floors. It’s a feeling that you can’t put your finger on. It’s in its people. In its memories. And in the layers of history built up over centuries of experience. The Castle Hotel started life in 1776, although records show that there has been a dwelling on the site since the 1400s. Over the course of a century the pub changed name several times, trading first as The Crown and Sceptre, then The Crown and Anchor and later The Clock Face. In the late nineteenth century the pub was acquired by Kay’s Atlas Brewery and started a new chapter as The Castle Hotel; which is probably when the current tiled façade and bar were added. In the early 1930s Frederic Robinson took over Kay’s Atlas Brewery and, consequently, The Castle Hotel. The pub’s now deeply cemented relationship with the city’s music scene probably began when it was a stopping off point for people on their way to Band on the Wall. In 1979, a now legendary John Peel interview with Ian Curtis took place here, weaving The Castle further into the fabric of Manchester’s musical heritage. Sadly, The Castle fell on hard times and closed it's doors in 2008. This cherished public house was not to remain closed for long though, and in 2009 friends Jonny Booth and Rupert Hill took over The Castle Hotel and set about bringing the decrepit building back to life. After a period of restoration which saw the infamous leaky roof replaced and the pub’s entire interior sympathetically brought back in line with it's rich heritage, the renovation was completed in October 2010 with the grand unveiling of the new Music Hall and Theatre at In The City 2010. So that’s the story so far. And now The Castle Hotel is ready for it's next chapter; one which will see this historical drinking house continue to evolve at the beating heart of Manchester’s creative communities.

Turks Head - Oldham

119 Castleton Road, Royton
Oldham, Lancashire OL2 6UP
United Kingdom

YOU read doom-and-gloom statistics about how many pubs a day nationwide are closing down. In these changing times, the local boozer is having to adapt or die Enter the dining pub. No longer the pub that does a bit of grub. These are serious in the eating game. And as a prime example, the Turks Head is damned good at what it does too. This is no all-day pub. It doesnt even open on a Saturday until 6 though people sat in their cars waiting for the rattling of the bolts told a story. We hadnt booked - though the reserved signs all around the tables in both the conservatory and the traditional heart of the pub told us we probably should have done. Thankfully, there were still a couple of spare tables and mine host Neil Butterworth led us past the bar to our table. We were somewhat disappointed not to be in the aforementioned conservatory as this looked splendid but later in the evening we were just glad to be eating as both rooms were full to capacity. The staff are efficiently busy, you order at a separate till away from the bar and while there is nothing unusual on the menu it is obviously a hit with the locals. We saw one of the car sitters a couple in their later years in and out inside an hour with a garlic bread starter, a main and a glass of wine each. Review by the Oldham Evening Chronicle Opening times Monday to Saturday Afternoon Bar 11.45 to 3.00 Food 12.00 to 2.00 Evening Bar 6.00 to 11.00 Food 6.00 to 9.00 Sunday Bar 12.00 to 10.30 Food 12.00 to 8.45 Bank Holiday Mondays Bar 12.00 to 11.00 Food 12.00 to 8.45
