The Ropemakers was built in the late eighteenth century by the Gundry family and was originally called The Sun Inn. The building was refurbished by the Brewery in 1989 and the name changed to The Ropemakers to reflect Bridport's main industry as the World's biggest net making centre which was based on the other side of the road. In some ways The Ropemakers is a bit of a Tardis in that the building is much larger than it looks from the street as it stretches back and back ending in a pretty courtyard area that is popular with smokers and drinkers alike. The current Landlords, John and Geraldine Baker have concentrated on good quality food made in their own kitchens from ingredients sourced from the best local suppliers. Food is served between 11:30am and 2:30pm Monday to Saturday. We are also open for food on Mondays where we have jazz on. We serve breakfasts from 10:00am to 11:30am on Saturday mornings. We also serve traditional Sunday Roasts on Sunday from 12:00 midday to 2:30pm. On Friday and Saturday evenings we offer an excellent live music scene featuring the best of the local groups plus various touring bands from as far afield as France. This Wetherspoon pub takes its name from the printing press imported from Colombia by John Peacock, in 1823. During the 20th century, printing overtook brewing as Watford's main trade. By the 1960s, thousands were employed in the industry, especially at Odhams and the Sun Engraving Company, owned by Robert Maxwell. Printing in Watford had been established in the town by John Peacock, who opened a printing works in 1820. His printing press, imported from Columbia, and used to print the first edition of the Watford Observer, is in Watford Museum.
