Established in 1990, Boaters hosts live jazz every Sunday evening from 8.00pm. You can see some of the finest musicians in the UK playing everything from bebop to contemporary jazz to latin, fusion, funk and soul. There really is something for everyone and as the admission is free there's nothing to lose by just coming down and enjoying a drink by the river. Boaters also has a fantastic restaurant serving a full menu of home cooked food, but make sure you phone for a Sunday evening reservation as it gets busy!! From its humble beginnings as a duo in 1990, it has now turned into a thriving venue where some of the finest jazz musicians in the country can be seen each week. Established musicians share the stage with new, young talent, and it has become a favourite Sunday night outing for both audience and musician. The gig began as a venture for two music students from Kingston University in 1990 - a platform to learn some jazz standards and gain some much needed experience in playing live. Since then the two founders, Simon Carter and Richard Cardwell, (both keyboard players ironically, although early Boaters visitors will recall one of them trying his hand at the saxophone!) have both gone on to become successful musicians in their own right. Richard's involvement with Boaters ended after about five years when he became very much in demand as a pop session musician leading him to play keyboards with Craig David, as well as being a successful song writer and producer. Simon continues to run the jazz gig at Boaters, playing there as often as possible when touring schedules with the likes of Jamiroquai, Ronny Jordan and Anastacia have permitted.

In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s west end where local musicians could jam. Today, in its new home in buzzing Soho, Ronnie Scott’s is one of the world’s most famous jazz clubs attracting full to bursting audiences practically every night. Since the early days of Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie and Miles Davis, the club continues to present the biggest names in jazz including Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson and Kurt Elling, all of whom shun the concert halls in favour of the intimate and welcoming environs of the club. Ronnie Scott’s is also a club firmly on the cutting edge; the first place to catch hotly-tipped rising stars, visionary artists and the next big thing. With it’s introduction of the Late Late Show, a relaxed ‘50’s speakeasy vibe with doors open till the wee hours, the Wednesday Jazz Jam (a late night instrumental jazz jam session), plus Ronnie’s Bar (upstairs at the club) eclectic programme of DJ sets and live music including Latin, jive, blues and flamenco.

We have a selection of quality wines, real ales and our tasty menu allows you to fill a hole with a selection of snacks as well as a full three courses. In addition to the wide variety of live music on offer at the Cross Keys, we also host a number of other events and can be booked for private parties. Music is at the heart of the Cross Keys with live music at least three nights a week. Our main focus is on jazz, blues, motown, R&B, funk and soul with great bands performing every Thursday and Friday night. We are also lucky to play host to the largest Ukulele group in the area with TWUNTs playing regularly. Encouraging musicians to get up and show us what they’ve got, our Open Mic session takes place the last Wednesday of every month.
