Bedford - Balham

77 Bedford Hill
South-West, London SW12 9HD
United Kingdom

Originally a hotel developed in the 1830's, The Bedford has been the central community hub of Balham for its entire existence. In the late sixties and seventies it was a spit and sawdust live music venue serving as a springboard for early gigs by acts including The Clash and U2. It was also famously used as the courtroom for the unsolved murder case of Charles Bravo, upstairs, in what was then the billiard hall, which is now the Ballroom. Our aim is to provide a first class night out for everybody making full use of our three floors, five bars and five function rooms. We offer dance classes throughout the week, live music four nights a week and club nights every Friday and Saturday. We've hosted the legendary Banana Cabaret comedy club for over 25 years every Friday and Saturday, as well as more recently a New Acts comedy night. The BedfordThere aren't many better places to watch a live game of football or rugby than here. Our huge Globe Theatre creates an incredible atmosphere which has seen considerable celebrations, nervous moments and perhaps a few tears in the last few years. We offer a handpicked tariff of top ales and international lagers to compliment a daily menu of uncomplicated, freshly prepared British pub grub. The place was sensitively tidied up (but not wrecked) in the late 90's, staying true to the original building as it was built, rather than emasculating the place in an attempt to catch up with gastro ventures. We've won several awards over the years including the Evening Standard's Pub of the Year and The Publican's Music Pub of the Year in 2002. We're proud of our local community ties and our record of constantly evolving to give our customers what they want. We have two sister venues, The Distillers in Hammersmith and The Distillers in Smithfield acting as live music venues as well as first class food/drink places with a terrific atmosphere. Welcome to The Bedford.

Nearly twenty years later, he took a series of photographs of Oldham; this series has recently been digitised and made into a panorama, prominently displayed in Gallery Oldham (in Greaves Street). Knott's studio and picture-framing business were taken over by his son, Alfred, in c1895. He continued taking and framing photographs at 55 Yorkshire Street for another thirty years. It was Squire Knott who took a series of photographs of Oldham; this series has recently been digitised and made into a panorama, prominently displayed in Gallery Oldham (in Greaves Street). Ice Barque Lloyds No1 Bar - Grimsby

Riverhead, Frederick Ward Way
Grimsby, Lincolnshire DN31 1XZ
United Kingdom

The name of this Wetherspoon pub recalls the elegant Norwegian ships, or barques, which once brought ice across the North Sea to Grimsby. By the mid 13th century, fish was Grimsby's most important trade. But, by 1500, the port was in serious decline. At the end of the 18th century, Grimsby was little more than a large village. It was rescued from its near-terminal decay by the building of, what came to be known as, 'the Old Dock', by the Grimsby Haven Company. Coupled with the opening of the railway, the port duly flourished. Its trade was made up of grain barges and Humber keels at the riverhead, as well as graceful Norwegian ice barques, colliers, cod smacks, herring drifters and trawlers. J D Wetherspoon was founded in 1979, when Tim (now our groovy chairman) opened his first pub in north London. We now have over 860 free houses across the UK, stretching as far north as Wick to as far south as Penzance.
