Crystal Palace - Glasgow
36 Jamaica Street
Glasgow, Lanarkshire G1 4QD
United Kingdom
A large, spacious, two-bar operation, spread over two floors, showing sporting events daily. Also a popular pre-club meeting point. This Wetherspoon pub is something of an architectural landmark. Designed by John Baird, its iron and glass construction was inspired by Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace, a huge greenhouse-like building, the centrepiece of the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was built in 1855-1856 to the designs of John Baird, who had used an exposed iron frame as early as 1827 in the hammerbeam roof of the nearby Argylle Arcade. The Jamaica Street Warehouse was one of the very first commercial buildings to copy Paxton's design.
Gilpins Bell - Edmonton
50-54 Fore Street
North, London N18 2SS
United Kingdom
The name of this Wetherspoon pub recalls the Bell Inn, which stood on the west side of Fore Street. The old pub was immortalised by William Cowper in his best-selling 18th-century ballad 'The Diverting History of John Gilpin'. Cowper had studied law and was appointed Clerk of the Journals to the House of Lords, but he suffered a breakdown and had to leave. Plagued by depression for a great part of his life, it was during one of these bouts that Lady Austen relayed the tale of John Gilpin to raise his spirits. As well as poetry, William Cowper is also known for writing hymns.
Capitol - Forest Hill
11-21 London Road
South-East, London SE23 3TW
United Kingdom
The Capitol opened its doors to the cinema-going public in 1929. Later renamed and converted into a bingo hall, the building now bears its original name. A rare survival of a 1920s cinema, The Capitol, on London Road, first opened its doors to the cinema-going public in 1929, with a screening of Man, Woman and Sin. Renamed the ABC in 1968, the cinema gave its last picture show in October 1973. There were plans to convert and even demolish the building. However, The Capitol opened as a bingo hall in February 1978, closing in the first week of December 1996. It is now this Wetherspoon pub.
