Black Boy Pub - Bricket Wood

79 Old Watford Road
Bricket Wood
St Albans, Hertfordshire AL2 3RU
United Kingdom

A 250-year-old edge of village pub, the part Grade II listed Black Boy was once frequented by livestock owners driving their cattle and sheep to markets along the toll road between Watford and Hatfield. A toll gate was outside this small, traditional inn. Now, it's the favoured local of countless regulars from Bricket Wood and the immediate area. CAMRA listed, a first choice among sports fans for its dedicated sports-only TV coverage and now the area's first wi-fi pub - allowing businessmen to use their laptops while enjoying a drink and a snack - the 'heart' of the Black Boy is its varied and inclusive clientele and its robust 'pub life'. The pub now features the latest j-Pod music system, with every top 40 single since 1952 and every album - the most comprehensive collection of music imaginable. The atmosphere shifts easily between often quiet and peaceful afternoons and evenings to the garrulous 'happy hour' - between 12pm and 6pm - and a welcoming communal 'village' get-together at other times. Comfortable, unfussy and welcoming, the Black Boy - how it got its name is explained in the pub's history - offers modern-day comforts without compromising its lengthy history. See the plaque in the front wall which details how a former publican left to fight in World War I - and paid the ultimate sacrifice. The pub also has a garden for outside drinking and children are welcome up to 6pm or at landlord Peter Dillingham's discretion. The French writer and traveller Hilaire Belloc once described the traditional English inn as a "fortress of virtue". We're not sure the Black Boy can live up to that promise - but it can promise good beer, good company and a good time.

The Sorry Head is a modern freehouse pub in the heart of Exeter. We have any speciality drinks, including local ciders and ales, all at very reasonable prices. We love music and hold an Open Mic every Tuesday and a Jam Night every Thursday. Pop in and see us. A bit of pub history. The Horse & Dray has changed its name several times. From 1831 to 1921, it was known as the George & Dragon Brewery, one of eleven Exeter breweries around at the time. Before that it was the Temeraire and from 1785 to 1799 it was the Royal Oak. Prior to 1831 on Whit Monday, various races were held, with the finishing line at the Temeraire. The starting point for these races was The Victory Inn which used to stand in Sidwell Street. Outside the Horse & Dray the road runs from a dual carriageway into a normal roadway. This was completed in the 1950's. The lower part of the old road can still be seen and is used to service the shops. A map of 1876 shows the George & Dragon to be in Ikenild Street with Blackboy Road starting at Kendall Buildings.

Star and Garter - Falmouth

52 High Street
Falmouth, Cornwall TR11 2AF
United Kingdom

Situated at the top of the historic Old High Street, the Star and Garter is one of Falmouth’s oldest Free houses. The Star and Garter is one of the older standing residential buildings in Falmouth. The property was built around 1800, and was the site of mercer and wine & spirit merchant until it became a public house in the 1870’s. Our bar has over 10 metres of windows on the seaward side giving spectacular panoramic views over the harbour, perfect for watching the sailing or just relaxing into the ever changing vista. In 2001 planning permission granted the building of a glazed 7ft cantilever extension along the 10 metre length of the property, opening up the seaward side and exposing it to a stunning 180 degree panoramic view of the harbour. Good honest wholesome food, all in sailor sized portions, all homemade on the premises using quality locally sourced ingredients. We usually have something going on, even if it’s just conversations from the outright silly to the philosophical! But as for organised entertainment here is a rough guide: First Sunday in the month - 9pm Me and the Devil with Steve, Morgan and Steve, a lively trio rockin’ the blues. Mondays – 9 pm Modern Jazz with the trio and guests. Always a varied line up – please check the falmusic website for the up to date list of guests. Tuesdays – Winter time darts league – a friendly bunch, but we can’t speak for the away teams though! Wednesdays – winter time euchre – a Cornish card league game, mostly harmless! We are proud to be the head quarters and starting point for the Falmouth Marine Band, the infamous marching band who are now in their 24th year. Sporting an ever changing colourful array of uniforms and most importantly entertaining the crowds with cannons, sillyness and a lack of musical ability, the much loved band raise thousands each year for local charities. It’s a great watering hole for both locals and visitors alike. So what are you waiting for - come up and see us sometime.

Their equipment was rudimentary and easy to dismantle to aid a quick escape from pursuing excise men or ‘gaugers’. It was reported in 1798 that the ‘industry was in a thousand hands’ and by 1823 there were 14,000 official discoveries of illicit stills. A mere fraction of those that escaped the ‘gauger’.

Dublin Castle - Camden

94 Parkway
North-West, London NW1 7AN
United Kingdom

The Dublin Castle is a legendary pub and music venue located 2 minutes away from Camden Town tube station. It has been ran by the same family for over 28 years and features 4 live bands every night as well as a great selection of beers, ciders and wines. There’s DJs after the bands on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and a fabulous jukebox in the front bar if you’re after a more relaxed atmosphere. But what is it that makes the Dublin Castle the long-standing centre of the indie rock universe? Is it because it’s Madness’ birthplace? Because its stage has been graced by everyone from Blur, through Coldplay, Supergrass, The Killers, The Arctic Monkeys, Billy Bragg, etc? Is it because it was no surprise to see Amy Winehouse behind the bar serving costumers? Or Suggs? (who, mind you, tended to ignore costumers and serve himself) Or is it because far from being just another Camden venue it has established itself as an indie rock institution? The answer is that it’s not only because of its musical heritage that people come to the Dublin Castle, it’s because whilst you enjoy a pint, play some tunes on the jukebox, check out the live bands, get your dancing shoes on for our DJs, chat to our friendly staff or even stage-invade a little, you’re inadvertently being part of this movement the Dublin Castle leads, this cultural legacy. Expect no castle battlements. Just pure rock and roll royalty. Cheap drinks before 6pm: Free Table Tennis Now available at The Dublin Castle! 12-5.30pm Mon-Fri, just enquire at the bar.

The ground floor is an intricate blend of window etchings, graffiti, ivy and a landscape of benches, while the games room holds table-football, vintage pinball and a unique Brighton pier 1960’s gaming rarity. The Queen’s alter ego appears in the basement bar; dark and a little twisted. The space caters for her every whim hosting cutting edge gigs and sweaty raves. The Queen has been busy keeping London’s music lovers, clubbers, art fiends and hedonists occupied every single night throughout the year. We’ve hosted some of the biggest names on the music scene such as; Tom Odell, Django Django, Lianne La Havas, Gold Panda and Miles Kane, a selection of the world’s best turntablists, and indie club nights promoted by some of the most famous faces you’ll find on TV. There really is something for everyone in this royal establishment. Despite being one of East London’s most popular venues, the old girl hasn’t let complacency set in and the venue has seen the installation of a brand new Funktion One sound system, and the creation of a stunning rooftop garden complete with BBQ kitchen, bars, garden shed bathrooms, hanging gardens, astroturf and panoramic views over the city of London. Quite simply, Queen of Hoxton is the ultimate youth club for the adults of the east side.
