Hales Bar - Harrogate

1 Crescent Road
Harrogate, North-Yorkshire HG1 2RS
United Kingdom

A brief history of the Hales Bar... Certainly the most historic and oldest pub in Harrogate, this establishment has a history going back to the earliest days of the town’s emergence as a leading spa resort. Originating as one of the first inns for spa visitors after sulphur wells were first established in the mid-17th century. Sulphur springs still flow beneath the cellar and their distinctive odours occasionally percolate up to the bar area. The premises were rebuilt circa 1827 and known as The Promenade Inn. At this time it was a most successful coaching inn. It was enlarged in 1856 and known as Hodgson’s until 1882 when William Hales became the landlord. Although the smaller bar has lost its historic character, the main saloon bar preserves it well, with mirrors and other interesting features and fittings from the Victorian era, including traditional gas lighting and cigar lighters. The inn would have been known to Tobias Smollett who in May 1766 visited Harrogate in which he set part of his novel Humphry Clinker. Used by Sir John Barbirolli as his favourite when the Halle Orchestra visited to play in the town, it was also used for interior scenes in the film Chariots of Fire.

Bridge on Wool - Wadebridge

The Platt
Wadebridge, Cornwall PL27 7AQ
United Kingdom

Formerly a Coaching Inn named ‘The Cornish Arms’ and re-named in the 1950’s it supposedly takes its name from the fact that the old bridge into the town was built on bales of wool due to the shifting sands of the tidal river, a more likely version is that the money for the bridge came from the sheep farming community who were responsible for the early prosperity of the town. The ‘Bridge on’ as it is known locally is a lively community pub and live music venue attracting a cross section of ages. There is always a wealth of ‘local knowledge’ available around the horseshoe shaped bar which can make for some fun and interesting conversations! The pub stocks real ales including Doom Bar from Sharps Brewery at Rock and Betty Stoggs from Skinners of Truro with a regularly changing guest pump for the more adventurous ale drinker’s! Children and dogs are most welcome and catered for and through the pub there is a sheltered garden. Sky sports and ESPN channels are available on multi screens which give the pub the benefit of being able to screen two different channels at any time. Three spacious en-suite letting rooms, decorated and furnished to a high standard were added in May 2008 and offer comfortable beds, flat screen Televisions with free view and iPod docking stations.
